  11.         US Robotics modems have been the favorite of SYSOPS.  I took a
  12.         look at one of their new modems.   The Sportster does have a
  13.         sporty look.   It is very small and lightweight.  Measuring 1
  14.         3/4" high, 6 5/8" wide and 5" deep.  The size and shape of this
  15.         modem reminds me of the intercoms parents use to monitor their
  16.         sleeping children,   while  they  are  in another room.

  18.         There  is  a  dial  on  the front to control the sound of the
  19.         internal speaker.   The lights are on top of  the modem.   I
  20.         prefer them on the front panel.   As with other US  Robotic
  21.         modems,  this  one  also  has switches.    The  switches  are
  22.         in the back of the modem.   A manual is included  showing  the
  23.         settings   for  many  popular  communications programs.   It
  24.         also includes the BBS and technical support numbers  of these
  25.         companies.

  27.         The underside of the modem has a list of the most often used
  28.         commands, and has the S-register settings.  This is also a
  29.         standard with US Robotics.  There is also a Quick Reference
  30.         Card.

  32.         For  most  people  this  modem  will work right out of the box.
  33.         Just plug-and-play.   I had one  problem  though  which  I  was
  34.         not able to resolve.   When I received a busy signal, the modem
  35.         would not stop and continue on to the next number,  or try to
  36.         redial this one.   It  kept the  busy  signal  until  the time
  37.         ran  out.    Then  it resumed operations.   If the next number
  38.         was  busy,  it would repeat the above procedure.   I checked my
  39.         settings,   and  even  reverted  to  factory defaults to no
  40.         avail.

  42.         Included  with  the  fax  modem  is  Blast Fax PC. Blast Fax is
  43.         a US Robotics  product. I was pleased with the performance  of
  44.         this software.   It was not complicated to set up or use.   It
  45.         is made for, and works specifically with the US Robotics modem.

  50.     Data Compression - CCITT V.42 bis/MNP 5
  51.     When using MNP it is rated for data throughput to 57,600 bps.

  53.        US Robotics Sportster  14,400  comes  with  a  5-year  warranty,
  54.        and supports industry standard AT command set.
